Broome: Where the Outback Meets the Sea

Posted on 26/09/2018 by Whitestar Travel

Clinging to gorgeous coastline on the Kimberley’s far-western edge, Broome is so much more than its famed 22 kilometre Cable Beach.

Warm temperatures and palms deliver a tropical vibe, but just beyond the aquamarine waters and resorts is a magnificent wilderness, nearly totally devoid of people. So vast is the history of the surrounding Yawuru country, you’ll even find dinosaur footprints!

Combined with its recent history as a pearling port, Broome has become a multicultural melting pot with the classic welcoming and laid-back feel of your typical Australian coastal town.

Come sundown, the whole town collectively pauses to take in the stunning sunset, watching it sink over the red rocks of the Kimberley, the white sands of Cable Beach and finally into the Indian Ocean.

Gantheaume Point is an absolute must. Only a short drive out of town, it is beautiful all day, but especially at dawn or sunset, as the light dances upon the cliffs, ocean and rocks. Here you’ll find one of the world’s most varied collections of dinosaur footprints, but make sure you come at low tide so you can actually see them (and watch out for slippery rocks!).

The Lurujarri Dreaming Trail is a 82km walk that follows a section of ancient songline north along the coast from Gantheaume Point to Coulomb Point. There are several guided nine-day walking trips each dry season, staying at traditional camp sites, with a strong emphasis on traditional Indigenous activities like spear-making, bush-tucker hunting, fishing, mud-crabbing and native jewellery making.

Feel like getting your heart racing? The Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park and Animal Refuge is home to some of Australia’s largest crocodiles, along with myriad colourful birds, dingoes, kangaroos, emus and snakes.

You can also take a guided kayaking tour to discover remote beaches, or enjoy a cruise sunset stroll on the back of a camel along Cable Beach.

Stay at the Cable Beach Club.

Fly there with from Melbourne or Sydney, starting at $799*.
