Portugal: Take the Road Less Travelled

Posted on 14/12/2017 by Whitestar Travel

As you watch the sun set over the sea in Portugal for the first time, you’ll likely wonder, “What took me so long?”

When planning a European holiday, most of us tend to forget this little country tagged onto the bottom of the continent, but with more hours of sunshine than any other European country and around 600 miles of coast, much of which is sandy beach, perhaps we shouldn’t.

And Portugal is more than a beach-goer’s paradise. It has something for everyone. Overflowing with history, you can explore medieval castles, cobblestone villages, captivating cities and, of course, the golden beaches.

Lisbon is the second oldest city in Europe (after Athens) and boasts inspiring architecture, a bustling nightlife and something many of Europe’s hotspots never will, affordability. In fact, most of Portugal is relatively cheap compared to the rest of the continent. A traditional meal, such as Arroz de Pato (Duck baked with rice), should never cost you more than 9 euros in a decent restaurant.

Food plays a huge part in Portuguese culture. Produce-filled markets overflow with freshly baked bread, olives, cheese and chargrilled fish. The Portuguese are masters of cooking simple, delicious meals, drawn from the richness of a bountiful coastline and fertile countryside.

Wine is also high on the agenda. While not boasting the reputation of their French and Spanish neighbours, as you wander through the scenic vineyards of the Douro Valley, we doubt you will care.

Most holidays in Portugal are understandably centred around its beautiful beaches. You can surf world-class breaks off dune-covered beaches or laze peacefully on sandy islands by calm seas. Variety is the spice of life and you can opt for the wild beaches of Costa Vicentina, the volcanic dark sands of the Azores or the balmy beaches surrounded by towering cliffs in the Algarve.

Best of all, if you wander off the beaten track, you can have a breathtaking beach all to yourself. Wander further and you’ll find hidden fishing villages miles away from the tourist crowd.
